Title: What the Moon Saw

Author: Laura Resau

Type of Book: Nonfiction

Main Character

Main Character: Clara Luna

A fourteen-year-old girl named Clara has never met her father’s parents. She knows her father crossed the border from Mexico illegally as a teenager, but she knows nothing about his childhood. Her grandparents invite her to go to Mexico for two months. During that time she comes to find out how they live and what they do.

The main character changes from Shy and timid to Excited and Outgoing by the end of the story.

The main character does the right thing when she goes and visits her grandparents.

I can identify with the character when she talks about her grandparents are so far away, and she never get to see them.

Another Character: Abuelita

Details: Her grandmother who is a healer, and helps people when their spirits are in trouble.

Another Character: Abuelo

Details: Her grandfather who is a worker in the fields.

Describe the time and place of the story: In Oaxaca, Mexico

Comments about the setting: The setting in the story adds more life to the story. It also brings out the main character by, making her less shy, and more open to life. The setting also increased my knowledge of how she became more interested in her ancestors.

What is the author trying to say in this story? What is his lesson in life?
Is there a moral to this story? I think the author is trying to say that, it is good to know about your family, and your heritage.

This is a story about courage, working hard, and family.

This book showed me to appreciate my family.

State a problem in the story and how it was solved: The girl had to go to an urban area, where there is no electronics; she tries to make the best of her trip, because she went there to be with her grandparents.

Dear Clara,

Hi how are you? How is your relationship with your grandparents going? I hope it’s going well. Have you talked to Pedro lately? I wanted to point out how extraordinary and brave I think you are! I admired how you never gave up when you were looking for the spirit waterfall.
I really enjoyed reading about your adventure in Mexico! Do you plan to go back to visit your grandparents? How do your parents feel about you going to Mexico all by yourself? Were they worried about you? I know my parents would be! Were you scared when you went underground to find the spirit waterfall? Did you think that you would get stung by scorpions like Pedro did? How did you feel when you helped your grandmother heal the baby? well I hope you will answer my questiops soon! Untill then...
Sincerely, Sandra
