Theme
What is the author trying to say in this story? That no matter who you are you can make a big difference on the people around you.
What is his lesson in life? That he was made for a purpose and no matter what you think will happen life can surprise you.
Is there a moral to this story? If you try hard and stick with it, no matter how much it hurts, you can achieve great things.
This is a story about (courage? working hard? doing the right thing? greed? importance of friends? jealousy? love? caring? happiness? sadness?) Courage, love, happiness, and sadness. This book showed me/I learned from this story: That no matter what, if you put your mind to it, it can be achieved.

What did you think of the book? I thought it was one of the most interesting books I’ve ever read.
What did you like about the book? I don’t really know. I guess it would have to be the fact that I just couldn’t put it down.
What didn’t you like about the book? Nothing
Was the story confusing or hard to believe? It was I little confusing at times but for the most part it wasn’t.
Was the story predictable (could you guess what was going to happen?) Absolutely not!!!!!!
Was the story believable? No, I could tell almost right away it wasn’t going to be.
The ending was: Fascinating and emotional, I cried when he took Gabe and left it was so happy and sad at the same time.
Dear Jonas,
First I just want to mention how proud I am of you. I know you went through some hard times, first with your stirrings about Fiona, and then being chosen as the new Giver. The courage it took for you to be able to achieve the things that you did was just incredible. I know in the book it tells us about the feelings you had when you skipped at first, but how did you really feel? Was it a feeling of panic mixed in with something else? Did you want to cry? And how did you feel when they called you up afterwards? Were you excited more than you were scared? Were scared or excited at all? Did you ever even imagine that something like this would ever happen to you? When they told you that they were making you the next Giver I was so excited because I knew you were right for the job. You are passionate yet strong, imaginative but yet down to earth. I think that’s the reason they picked you. They knew you would be the strongest yet most passionate person on this job. Yet, I think that the whole time the Giver knew in the back of his mind that you would make that very hard decision to leave with Gabe. How long did you think that one through? I love how you had the courage to do that. It must’ve been a painful yet good feeling, letting go of all those memories and feelings. How did you feel? And are you happy that you made the decision to take Gabe with you? Did you miss Fiona at all? And what about your best friend? Did you miss him at all?
Well, I just wanted to say how proud I am of you.
Love now and always,
Madeline Zerr
