NATION by Terry Pratchett
Mau and Daphne are unlikely protectors and leaders of a band of people who have come together on an island that was ravaged by a huge tidal wave. Mau, a native boy, assumes the role of chief of the motley crew who range from mothers without babies to babies who need a mother. He and Daphne care for these people and assume the roles needed to rebuild a society. The struggle to stay alive is difficult, but Mau takes strides to become the man he wants to be putting his life in danger to keep the people safe. Daphne, a fortunate girl from the other side of the world, wholeheartedly takes on the role of caregiver to these natives. The mixture of historical people, invented oceans and locations, and the coming together of different time periods, creates an other-worldly adventure of love, loss, and gaining of an independent life for two young heroes.
