The Watsons go to Birmingham--1963 by CP Curtis
Christopher Paul Curtis’s character creation in this book is real and hilarious to perfection. The “Weird Watsons” are the talk of Flint, Michigan because of their strange ways. Kenny’s mother insists on dressing his sister Joetta in so many layers she can hardly move, his brother Byron is a trouble maker who does wrong around every corner, and Kenny is the odd one who is good in school and mostly stays away from mischief. All seems fine until the Watsons take a road trip to visit the family in Alabama during the tumultuous 1963 race-hate filled time. The whole family is in shock after a tragedy strikes on their visit. Although it is difficult for Kenny and the family, all is well for them because of their love and support of each other.
