Elijah of Buxton by Christopher Paul Curtis
Eleven-year-old Elijah Freeman is a free black boy who was born of escaped slaves. He is the first free-born in his Canadian settlement. He tells the humorous and sometimes sad story of this community’s people. Though he is seen as “fra-gile”, Elijah proves to be a hero when he takes it upon himself to help get a man’s family across to Canada and free from the slave hunters who are lurking. This look at former slaves and first generation free African-Americans/Canadians is a unique perspective on the late 1800’s, and the hardship faced by so many who were finally able to start lives of their own.
